    Help with Linux
    #11

    Re: Help with Linux

The biggest thing with Ubunutu is that it's goal is to be user-friendly, and because of that I think it largely succeedes. So whenever a person is new or unfamiliar with Linux, that's the one I recommend.

I personally also think it's good for seasoned Linux people, but to each his own here.

My personal favorite thing about Ubunutu is that I get the excellent package management of Debian, but in a user-friendly way.

I came from a gentoo background and I've even customized a Linux distro for my previous employer (custom kernel, custom boot procedure, etc). Linux is Linux; these distro's are just different flavors of the same thing, and so the best distro for you is the one that makes you more productive. For me, that's Ubunutu because I can spend more time developing and less time playing IT.

Yes, I'm totally hijacking this thread. Cope.
    Woops never saw this:
-Its user friendly for those new to linux distros.
    -It auto installs most drivers
-Has a soft core version of compiz
    -easy package manager

As Ewok said, theres a flavor of linux for everyone, mines gentoo (very uptodate) and slax (very stable)

Does Linux have anything like Directx10 yet? I'll be getting a PC later this year, and if I can use linux on it and still run all of my games especially with Dx10 support I would have more money to put towards other things.
enf-Jesus its been like 12 minutes and you're already worried about stats?! :-P

definitely won't be able to play all your games on linux, White.

Personally, if you want to play around with linux I'd use it virtually (VirtualPC from microsoft is free to download from their site). A lot less hassle and you'll figure out if you want to look at it more seriously. But if you are looking at it for gaming... fuggettaboutit.

Krakkens and shit. stop tempting them.

Games on it are hit and miss

I can run TF2 on it, but at reduced graphics.

If you want to look into it:
www.winehq.com (free windows translation layer - i.e. runs windows programs under Linux)
http://www.codeweavers.com/products (commercial version of the above, so you get support and some programs/games work better)

    I just used Wine itself
