Personaly i have had this arguement before and over all nVdia kicks ASS
. The experience with ATI is not good. I've, by accendent, smoked the video card, ATI, in our brand new laptop. It was a 512mb but it litteraly smoked. Smoke poured out and the laptop was done for. And the only problem with nVidia's GeForce is that some of them need to come with its own fan.
Our Dell XPS 720 Black($2,250)
Intel 3.0Ghz Core2 Duo(2 cpu's with 100 and 120mm fans)
4gb of ram at 800mhz(max is 8gb at 800mhz)
nVidia GeForce 8800GT 512MB single(needs a **FAN** CoD4 dead bodies are extending) Dead bodies in CoD4 SREAAAAAAAAAAAAATCH to its dead limit. Over all thats the only problem with nVidia's GeForce. Make sure your card, if you go with ATI or nVidia has a fan. Just incase.

AMD just released the HD 4850 and HD 4870 video cards, reports appear that the ATI Radeon HD 4870 X2 will be ready in August.
AMD will begin shipping reference design boards with 2GB GDDR5 memory at the end of the month reports Digitimes based on industry sources.
AMD will also ship the 4870 X2 (RV770XT) GPU to vendors designing their own video cards.
The ATI Radeon HD 4870 X2 video cards have supposedly a price-tag around $499.
More details on Digitimes. See more photos of our ATI Gadget Model Raquel.
Well hell now that I think about it two 4870's will set you back 600$
I hope they have that wrong and drop it to $399
Two 4870's in crossfire smoke the 280gtx so this 4870x2 monster will make you nvidia fan boys shit your pants

Re: ATI vs Nvidia
ATI fanboys, your time may have come with the R700-based Radeon HD 4870 X2. It's a $500 multi-GPU card that basically straps together a pair of Radeon HD 4870s with 2GB of onboard memory to create ATI's fastest single card ever. (It's not your imagination, they're really stepping with the Nvidia-killing, which is sweet.) Benchwise, it actually beats Nvidia's monster GeForce GTX 280 running in SLI in a couple of games, like Age of Conan.
One of the most fundamental changes in the R700 cards—which are two RV770s with a PCI Express switch connecting the the two and double the memory—is that the GPUs actually communicate with each other, whereas past CrossFire configs had both cards basically rendering their own sections independently, then combining them. AnandTech says it's not entirely clear how much communication there will be, but there will definitely be more than there was. Also, the drivers still need to come up to spec to let the card truly shine, but the hardware is totally in the right place. [AnandTech]
The R700 does have a plate across the back of the card like the 3870 X2, and it also has RAM on the back as well (the 4870 carries all it's RAM up front).
In benchmarks, it pretty much performs like two of its HD 4870 cards strapped together in CrossFire
The information we have here shows the incredible potential R700 has, but it will be absolutely necessary to wait until launch day to see if the execution behind the hardware has been enough to realize this potential across the board.
ATI is the way to go at the moment.
4800 series is the best ever and the prices to performance ratio cannot be beat as well.
