Hardware Question

Hey all, first I would like to dismiss this and say that this is my first post, and this community looks great. I am excited to become a member of it, and hope to help it grow any way that I can. Now, onto what the thread is really about.

Currently, my computer is as follows:

Windows Vista Ultimate 32bit
Pentium D 2.8GHz
1GB DDR2 RAM
450w Power Supply
nVidia GeForce 7600

For my birthday, I am going to be receiving 4GB of RAM to put inside of it along with some more fans and a new power supply (750w). Currently, I get some low FPS on Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare. I'm talking around 60 to 10 with everything turned down. I am assuming that Vista stealing some of my RAM could be contributing to the problem. However, I am wondering if the new stuff I am getting for my birthday would be able to play it fine (I don't care what it looks like, I just want high FPS) until I can afford a new processor and graphics card.

Yeah, 7600 should be o.k. for COD4 at moderate res with AA off. Won't be ideal, but ought to tide you over until you can take care of the GPU and CPU. Although, by the time you're ready to upgrade both of those, it might be a good idea to refresh your mobo as well.

What motherboard do you have, and does it support 4gb's of ram. Then with any OS unless you get a 64bit system, the 32bit system will not recognize the whole 4gb's, maybe 2 3/4 to 3 1/2 gb's of ram. Before I did the ram I might look at the video card first (my opinion though).

Gotta disagree saszeus... You are totally correct on it not recognizing all of the ram, but with only one gig of ram currently his best bang for the buck is definitely going to be getting more ram. With vista ultimate, the OS is going to be snacking on quite a big chunk of that 1 gig all by itself unless you are saavy enough to be able to turn off all the bells and whistles. With 2 gig it's going to be tolerable for game playing. On a 32 bit OS 3 gig is optimal. 64? Go as high as your motherboard will allow.

I believe that 32 bit supports up to 3½GB of RAM. Vista takes up 500MB alone. I am upgrading the RAM first because it is cheapest, and it will speed up my entire system in general. (No more staring at the COD4 splash screen for 5 hours.)

It's somewhat of a misnomer. The OS supports and sees the full 4 gig. BUT... it maps out the top end of that ram for drivers and other OS specific stuff. So the amount of ram you'll see in a system with 4 gig will be variable. One machine might show 3.8 gig, while another will show 2.8 depending on the number of USB devices, internal expansion cards, etc. So 4 gig is worth doing, it's just not going to give it all to you.
