How do I know if my laptop is dying?

Well, I'm pretty sure I don't have any malware on my computer. I'm running a scan just in case (both spyware and AV). The last few days, I've been having weird frame rate issues that have resulted in some weird lag even when I have the best ping on the server (COD4, TF2, 2142) and when the servers themselves are fine.

My laptop is pretty old (3 years old now), and if my laptop is starting to go, I'd like to know sooner than later so I can get a replacement. A laptop is very much integral to my research right now and will be important for any CAD work I do this fall for my Engy classes, so I need to be on top of this.

Things have been slowing down with Firefox, and with the modeling software I'm using right now, Argus Labs and NX 5.0.

Does Task Manager indicate any unusual activity, especially CPU usage? I get PC slowdowns most often from some process running in the background; in my case, it's often Windows Update preparing to inform me of a new update. Check that when the problem occurs.

Nothing unusual has been happening in the background other than the hardware interrupt problems I've been having for a few years (off and on 3% of my CPU).

Since most of your problems seem to be connection-oriented it could be your ethernet cable or your NIC going bad. If you notice any increase in packetloss the pins in your NIC could be wearing down and unable to read the packets off the cable correctly or might be getting crosstalk or problems with jitter at the end of the cables.

A quick test to see if your laptop is dying or not is to throw it down a flight of stairs...if it boots to Windows afterwards your laptop is pretty tough and would probably last you a while longer, if not, your laptop is dead.
