    Re: Laptop Upgrade Unfeasible?

The CPU as far as I knew was a "mobile" athlon 64 3000+. What you guys are saying is theres no difference as this is a desktop cpu, and turions are the actual laptop models. Oh well, I might have some fun gutting the parts i dont need and welding a nice slab of metal to the heatsink. At this point I might as well get a new laptop if I'm going to spend any more money.

    Re: Laptop Upgrade Unfeasible?

    So I fixed it :9

I refused to let it be like this so i tried cleaning it with isopropyl, lapping it with light grit paper untill shiny and smooth, cleaned with isopropyl again, and applied Thermalright Chill Factor paste to it. Now i'm getting ~80C idle and ~90C when i'm gaming. So everything is fixed with a bit of care and patience, even thought the temps would still give some people a heart attack, I don't care.

    Edit:
So I've further aided the situation by installing some AMD programs. I installed dual core optimizer, and mainly - AMD Processor Driver Version 1.3.2.0053 for Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 (x86 and x64) helped a great deal. The cpu speed drops to 800mhz when idle, so I'm getting 52C IDLE. The fan isn't screaming anymore and I don't see any difference in games, so it seems to be working well.

Cause of the problem: The bottom of the heatsink had a wierd pad on it. I removed it before when I was getting 115C but it wasn't completely off. Once I sanded it off with light sandpaper, everything was better. The AMD programs just iced the cake

damn, wonder if I can do that to my ASUS EEE PC's 900mHz intel......its a celeron, but the main issue is power usage...this is a Ultra Low Voltage CPU...

also, the stock cooling fan on this thing is WIMPY...but VERY silent...so I might upgrade that too...

Check the specs for the mobo on it...I honestly didn't expect this thing to support this good of a cpu at all...so I really couldn't say what the EEE can support. The new EEE pc looks sick, the bigger screen might be a selling point for me.

I went from 128kb to 1MB L2 cache, not to mention dual core; 64bit support. Well I'm stoked as you can tell.

I used Thermalright Chill Factor. I have some silver compound, but the exposed IC's on the chip worry me so I used something that doesn't conduct. (or at least I don't think it does)

I could've gotten the EEE 900 (newest one) but the smaller screen of the 4g I got is what sold me on it :-P

I have my big powerful desktop...all I needed in a laptop was SMALL size, GOOD battery life, and LIGHT WEIGHT....which the EEE PC gives me!
something to take to lectures and take notes....and by take notes, I mean surf and whore/troll the TTP forums :-P

Is the EEE pc with the bigger screen more clunky? I thought they just upgraded the screen basically. At the price i saw the new one for ~$530, just too much for it I find. I think my friend copped the cheap one for like 300 bucks, which is awesome

bigger screen, bigger size/keyboard, more weight.

    faster processor (I believe)

    and "more memory"*****

****Not really...they use the same size of SSD...but you loose the SDHC slot...basically, they hardwire an SD card onto the MoBo for you...which is STUPID.

It's almost better to get it w/the 4gig SSD that comes with the EEE PC 4G or the 8gig that comes w/the 8G...cause atleast then you can hot-swap 16gig SDHC cards.
