XP Pro and Vista on same router?

Currently I have 2 machines running XP Pro linked on a single router - shared internet access and printing. I'm looking to build a new machine and the question is do the linked machines have to have the same operating system? If so I'll buy another OEM of XP. Or does it make more sense to upgrade both all of the systems to Vista?

You can use different OSes for each machine. I have 4 computers at my house, 3 are on XP, and 1 on Vista. If you are going to share files between the XP and Vista machines it will take some tweaking, but can be done.

Ive had Vista for a few years now and have had some preliminary problems with drivers, as well as just general annoyances (USB keyboard & mouse not working out of sleep/hibernate, etc...) but once those problems were ironed out, it has been a good OS for just everyday use of internet browsing, gaming, and playing music/videos.

Not sure what youre going to be using yours for but most likely Vista is the way to go if you want to stick with Windows.

I think Vista is safe now also.

You can mix and match OSes on a network sure. Vista and XP communicate fairly easily...

Trying to get a windows 98 machine to talk a windows 2000 machine correctly was extremely irritating for some reason. but those days are long over.
