Thanks for the ideas.
For $700 I think that I can upgrade nicely:

Re: RAID 0
I'm running two WD 160G Sata1.5G drives in a Raid 0 and I get a 5.9 on the stupid Vista Primary Hard Disk performance index.
This program shows benchmarks and my Raid array gets the following numbers:
Sequential Writing 83.74MB/s
Sequential Read 70.5MB/s
Buffered Writing 107.25MB/s
Buffered Reading 196.38MB/s
Random Reading 49MB/s
This is compared to my single 500G Sata1.5G drive at
Sequential Writing 57.22MB/s
Sequential Read 68.18MB/s
Buffered Writing 131.69MB/s
Buffered Reading 148.83MB/s
Random Reading 48MB/s
and compared to the Raptors 150G Sata1.5G (raid 10) in our database server here at work
Sequential Writing 172.21MB/s
Sequential Read 93.47MB/s
Buffered Writing 173.59MB/s
Buffered Reading 175.71MB/s
Random Reading 38MB/s
The Raptors are the fastest (they would probably be quicker if I stopped the actual database from running (they were taken at 35% CPU load where my desktop was at 2%) but the Raid 0 is still quicker, and as long as you backup your data it would def increase performance at a cost much less /GB than the raptors.
