Add another stick of 1G Ram to make 3G?

so i was cleaning out some of my old e-waste. (old mics, headsets, mice, keyboards)

and found another stick of 1G ram. after looking inside my rig i found that i already had two of them inserted.

after talking to a friend of mine he suggests that having 3 gigs of RAM is pretty much going to be a waste..... anyone care to say otherwise?

what OS you running? i know theres some limitations depending on your OS but not 100% sure on which is which. I think XP has a limit of 2gigs

3 gigs is going to be better than 2... they might not work together if they arent the same socket though

Not quite, it will just give him more room.

Throwing more RAM into your system doesn't make it faster if you don't use close to 100% of what you got. And if the speed is different, your computer is just going to clock all of them to the slowest stick of RAM in your machine.

And the "limit" Cojiro was talking about depends on if you are running a 64 or 32 bit OS, regardless if it is Vista, XP, Linux, whatever.

For 32 bit OS's, the max it will recognize is 3 gigs.

Also, RAM is usually dual channelled in most modern mobo's (no, I don't mean DDR). It basically can use two sticks at the same time. If you throw in an odd number, I'm not sure if it turns it off for both odd and even banks or just the bank without a matched module.
