I'll have to give that a try.

Playing my normal games with the fan trick doesn't get that hot though. For about 3 hours of CS and 2 hours of Crysis, I didn't go over 85 degrees.

For normal use, I'll mostly leave it on auto because I know these new cards can take these temps no problem. They were designed to be quiet, thus designed to take the heat. When I can monitor it though, since I plan on OC'n soon, I have been playing around with fan RPMs, and since ATI CCC doesn't have any way to control the fans, it was an easy fix to drop idle loads.

For the time being I'm just gonna put a Zalman on there and probably stick to auto...

Re: Ordering my new comp. tonight...final look over please?

well, i got all the stuff today and built the rig in a little over 7hrs. It was my first build, so i took my time and read, re-read, and re-re-read to make sure i was doing everything correctly. My cables aren't quite as neat as ya'lls im sure are since i got a mid tower case and not a full tower, but oh well i'll eventually got a good full-tower.

Liquid cooling is going kickass, my cpu temps aren't exceeding 105*F at the moment. It'll be interesting to see how the temps rise later when i can afford waterblocks for the ram and video cards, but for now its holding up excellent.

I ordered the three thermaltake 120MM smart fans and am just running them on manual control, and their working very well and push/pull a TON of air at full speed even though their a bit noisy unless my headset is on.

I'm installing XP pro as we speak, then have like 4000 downloads to get from microsoft for updates.

Question i have for ya'll for order of install/update:

    XP Install + updates
    Bios Updates
    Mobo drivers/updates
    vid card drivers/updates

Anything im missing? or do i have the order wrong?

    Thanks,
    Dave

Sure, it is not absolutely necessary, but when you can drop it by 30 or so degrees, why not? I don't think it's an issue of the card running well, just piece of mind that it is a little cooler in your box...
the fan speed changes depending on the core GPU temperature. Download ATItool, and spin the 3dCube for a few minutes...you'll hear your g-card start ramping up.

then stop the cube....and listen to you fan slow back down and be quiet again.

If you want your computer to sound like an F-15 all the time.....with case fans and CPU fans and GPU fans and NB fans and HD fans blowing 100% all the time.....that your perogative.

but there's no point in enduring that kind of noise if it has no benefit. Of course, if you're overclocking, you'll need to adjust fan speeds to keep your components in the safe temp zone. But until you reach the redline on temps......let the fans take care of themselves.

I ship all bigdog boxes that have motherboard fan controllers in the BIOS (asus's Q-fan control, for example), in silent mode for the case, CPU, and PSU fans, whenever possible. CPU and system temps still idle in the 35-40C range, which is 30 below the shutdown/alarm temps, and at least 15-20 below the load temps. Easily.

    Fan noise is stupid.
    F-15 is at my feet.
I have all fans in my pc at 100%
Having both 3870's with maxx fan speeds is nice and loud.
    There is a overclock involved.
Same i have 2 80 MM fans in the front, an 80 MM in the back, a 120 MM on the side, plus the fans on my GPU and CPU, everyone of these are running at 100%, and the noise doesn't bother me at all.

I'd do your XP updates first, assuming you have internet access. If your XP disk is old, most of the updated drivers you'll want to install are going to need SP1 and SP2....so get windows up to date first.

    Then, BIOS, motherboard drivers.

Then, sound and video...those are always the last things I do.

Since you have to download a ton of Microsoft updates you may want to consider downloading Service pack 3, most of the updates are in that.

If your really smart... or just anal, after you update all of your drivers, and such, do a disk image of your Hard drive. Then if you have a problem down the road you can just reload the disk image and your done(minus re-installing all your games and programs).

As far as liquid cooling goes, it does a good job. A buddy of mine once used a tranny cooler from a used car (found at a junk yard) and built an insane liquid cooling system(were not talking your moma's home bought kit).

    Anyway enjoy the new PC.
