since we have a lot of pre-builts at my house, and i'm going to be moving plus hopefully (if i have any money left after rent, food, books etc.) saving to make a sweet desktop computer, I'm wondering if it worth it to try to upgrade a pre-built computer at all, or should i just wait till i get the money to make one from scratch?

Re: Pre-Builts
Really it is a matter of what is in the pre-built now and what can it take.
Some are crap that you can barely upgrade, others are fully upgradeable.
Personally, my favorite systems have been ones I built from scratch (except for an optical drive, or floppy, etc.)

Even if your brand name box is not upgradable, some parts can be kept for a custom rig to save some dough.
Optical drive, Hard Drive, floppy (if you still live in the 90s), and sometimes other things can go into a custom machine and save some money.Sleep, eat, conquer, meditate, repeat.
