Strange ... Strangeness HELP
Ok, this is going to sound like one of those lame support calls a help desk agent would get but get this.
I can only view certain web pages right now ex, texasteamplayers entire site works, i can see the google front page but when i search for something i just sit there timing out. Does it in Firefox and IE. No firewall, no antivirus, no adware, just behind a nat. Just started yesterday, no system changes made, going to boot into a different os to see if i still get it. I can go through a http proxy and the net works fine...
WTF, this some stupid windows windows setting to work offline? (ff is not set to work off line btw)..
Thoughts?
This is insane, it makes me think that maybe just some of those support calls really are not user error.....

Re: Strange ... Strangeness HELP
if its working through an HTTP proxy, then you probably have a problem with your DNS on the inside of your NAT. Its possible that its no longer pointing to a correct external DNS(which is what youll need to correctly translate the majority of pages).
Although the fact that you can view certain sites might have something to do with the local cache stored on your computer. Try double checking your DNS on the internal network, or if you dont have one make sure your Default gateways and everything seems to be translated correctly.
Open up command prompt and do some tracerts and see if you can at least get ICMP replys from the websites you cannot load.

Nic settings are the exact same for ubuntu and xp (given out but dhcp anyways)...

Re: Strange ... Strangeness HELP
in xp ping 127.0.0.1 if it fails yer TCP/IP stack needs to be reinstalled
Edit: the ping will probably work fine since even in XP you can get to webpages using an http proxy. It could be your winsock catalog fucking up and is a bitch to rebuild manually. Most Bestbuys have a quick fix that they dont charge for on their MRI CD that fixes these issues in about 20-30 seconds, however it all depends on which agent you get.
IF yer TCP/IP stack is installed correctly, i think winsock would be your next bet to fix. Those two catalogs/stacks cause 90% of non-NIC related problems in windows.
Btw, i worked for geeksquad and hence know about that fix, but they just got a new repair CD. Manse has copies of an older one that would work if you reset the date in your bios and windows back to August 2007(i think). otherwise google for resetting your winsock and maybe someone else has a nifty program to use.

Re: Strange ... Strangeness HELP
had a virus called vuntom or something like that, that pretty much installed a proxy on my comp and forwarded traffic through it, and controled it.
Still removing it... sigh, had to be yesterday when i dled a 'patch' to fix a dx 10 sdk issue. Lame

Re: Strange ... Strangeness HELP
ah virtumonde is a bitch...i have a 20 page walkthrough on how to remove it if you would like?
Basically its just finding all the threads and the .dlls that cause it and removing them. They are mainly in C:\Windows\System32 and have random letters as names. Remove any funky .dlls that were created on the same day as well as deleting all your temp files before doing that. After restarting you should be able to get online at least.
