Hard drive making funny sound - help
I was sitting at my computer browsing the internet on Saturday when I heard what sounded like my hard drive spin up like it does during a reboot. It made that sort of springy dong noise then it spun up fast and settled down to normal again.
Nothing about my computer's performance over the last few days has indicated there is a problem - TF2 still runs solid (and since my headphones are on, I don't know if it's doing this in-game or not).
Anybody ever heard of this?
Upon replaying the sound in my head, I can't be absolutely sure it isnt one of my CD drives...
Regardless, any ideas?

I don't know how common this is, but my bro's computer is doing it ALL THE TIME. It's not just a fan, because I have a bigger fan in the back of my case than he does, and it's completely silent, so it must be something in his hardware. My best thought is either his Hard Drive, DVD drive, or his 8800GTS. In the case of his video card, I have the 8800GT, and that sucker is pretty quiet, even during the hardest of gaming sessions.
Mine also does this too every once in a while. Nothing ever really happens, it just makes the sounds and all. I wouldn't worry about it unless you start seeing problems.

My computers have all done that with varying degrees of frequency. I assume it's because I set my HD to stop spinning every few minutes without use, and I picked a too-low number, meaning it had to spool back up every time something needed to be written to disc. Probably not an issue, just make sure you have all the essentials backed up and don't worry about it.

Remove the cd's from the drives to eliminate them being the source of the problem. hard drives, especially on vista are always optimizing and indexing and try to keep everything organized. the more full your disk is, the harder and more often the disk has to do this kind of stuff.
