    Router Issue

    Here is my setup

    Modem ------> Router -----100ft ethernet cable----> computer

    Before I got my ethernet cable, I use to actually take the modem out of the living room and hook it up to my computer (cause the wireless gave me terrible ping too). This gave me an excellent ping, but it rendered my roommates from having the internet. I thought I could correct this problem by buying an ethernet cable to hook up to the router to my computer and all would be fine. It isn't. Even with the ethernet cable running from the router to my computer I still get horrible, constant lag. If I hook up the ethernet cable to the modem I get a perfectly fine ping. It's only when the e-cable is hooked up the router is when I get terrible ping.

    Right now, there are 2 other computer recieving wireless internet from the router.

    Interesting. You shouldn't be getting extra lag from a land line connection. The only thing the Router is doing is Network Address Translation(technically its a PAT or Port Address Translation since you're still only using the 1 provided IP address from your provider) between the private network it creates and your modem. It's possible that for some reason your router doesn't like your modem or vice versa. Some telecommunications companies use MAC address filtering which forces you to basically hook up directly to the modem. It only wants taht unique address from teh computer. Now most routers nowadays have a clone MAC address ability which makes the modem think that its really your computer.

    I don't know if this is your case...but it appears that the router and modem don't like talking to each other.

    Same cable or are you using different cables?

    Have you tried different ports on the router?

    Does this happen when anyone else is using it, only when you're using it or at all times?

    Does the router have wireless on? Does your computer have wireless? Have you tried disabilying wireless?

    I will try different ports and see how that goes.

    I have 2 other roommates. 2 of them are using wireless internet. I'm the only one running the e-cable from the router to my computer. And no, I haven't tried disabling wireless except for taking my wireless card out of the computer

    I'd also try rebooting the router and possibly apply any updated firmware if it's out there.

    Is your modem in bridged ethernet mode? If you're running a router, it needs to be. You'll need to setup all the required info for the PPPOE settings(mostly the protocol used in the US) into the router Internet section.

    I would also try reserving an IP for your PC and decreasing your DHCP pool usually it's defaulted at 100 i think. You're definitely not going to have 100 people on your home network. This will also help out on security.
