Can anyone help me, i'm trying to install tropico on my computer but every time it gets to about 25% and stalls before giving me a component transfer error saying:
Component: Program Files
File Group: Data
File: E:\_SETUP\data2.cab
Error: Data Error (Cyclic redundancy check)
then i click okay and it closes the installer. :8

Not a happy error. Your media is messed up, or your files are corrupt, either way your probably not going to be able to get around this without a new copy.
There is a chance that its having a problem with your OS since it is an older game but that error seems pretty specific to damaged files.

Re: Component Transfer Error
If you think the disk is scratched; hold it up to a light source- if you can see light passing through any part of the silver backing your disk is hosed, if its just some surface scratches causing the laser problems reading it there are methods for smoothing those over and restoring your disk back to working condition, keep searching google and you should ahve some luck.

it looked alright to me, i didn't see anything really deep, most you could barely see without being held under a light, there is one that isn't deep enough that its at the backing but it runs in almost a full circle, i think (from the looks of it) it was caused by a cd-rom drive (my old comp i had tropico installed on did have cd-rom drive issues for awhile there)

Re: Component Transfer Error
Give the whole disc a very good going over with a lint-free cloth. Sometimes optical drives can be super-sensitive to anything on the disc like grease (fingerprints, etc.), smudges or films. Unless you have really severe scratches, the drive really doesn't care (hooray error correction), but something that diffuses the beam over a large area like a fingerprint will cause a mass-misread and can cause a CRC error if too much of the data is 'missing'.
That what works for me.

Re: Component Transfer Error
Also, scratches that run the same way as the data (ie: around the disc) are far more likely to cause a problem than scratches that run ACROSS the data. A scratch that runs all the way from the inside of the disc to the outside might be able to be read... but something a quarter inch parallel to the outside of the disc could cause a read error.
