    Re: Problems with internet

I ended looking at my network card's settings out of curiosity, and I noticed that I actually do have compatibility for b, g, and n.

Is there a setting on my network card that could be the issue?

My brother-in-law also recommended something called tomato. Should I use that at all?
enf-Jesus its been like 12 minutes and you're already worried about stats?! :-P

i honestly have no experience (yet) for wireless N. the simple fact that someone brought it up suggests to me that it would be worth giving it a try. since wireless B is so antiquated, i would suggest setting your laptop's "compatibilty" to B, even though N is supposed to be completely backwards compatible. i've seen dumber things in my time, but do it anyway.

your brother-in-law's suggestion is a replacement firmware for the same device. i'm sure that the manufacturers of both the router and the wireless NIC have taken a lot of things into consideration to make them as compatible with most other hardware as possible. i doubt that a firmware replacement will be the fix for your problems. by the look of what i found about tomato, it seems to be a "prettier" version of the firmware for the router that allows for a little bit more control of the device.

more importantly, unless you have a wireless G-based linksys, it will not run:

    SO DON'T EVEN TRY IT!
if you try to flash a device with firmware that doesn't support the hardware, the device will become unusable! i've actually done this on a couple of different devices, and it's been a hard learning curve! (luckily, one of the devices was cisco, and i was able to z-modem the correct firmware to it!)

Unplug the router for a coulpe minutes to clear its memory cache, this will not change any of its settings and often solves a great number of ills.

Braddoc, the compatibility mode did help quite a bit. My packet loss has been significantly reduced. Hopefully this will solve the issue.
-Pages are still loading slower than they should be on this connection and on this laptop (my mother's laptop still loads faster).
