Hmmm. Could I run SLI with that plus my 8600gt? My MOBO is capable of SLI. Would it give me any benefit now or should I just wait and upgrade to a newer card and MOBO that is pcie x16 2.0?

As long as your old card is PCI-E it will work since they are essentially the same card, pairing them will be a big jump particularly if you want to overclock as they run cooler usually. If you can get it next to free well then absolutely no reason not to use it until you round up the cash for a new card.
