Routers?? I am screwed...
Ok so I just got comcast here. Think roomie went with the 10 meg package over the 6 or 8. Now is the fun part.
I need to get a wireless router so they can check emails and shit on their labtops, BUT be able to hard wire my desktop in.
Is there a way to control who gets most of the output?
What router is best to use? I want some kick ass gaming, but dont want to dredge along having to split the net 3 ways.I am a member of the American Sarcasm Society and head of the Frequently Unanswered Questions Division. The ASSFUQD.:

there are some gaming routers out there, DLINK makes one that I use - its suppose to route gaming traffic higher than crap internet but really email checking isnt going to screw you over too much, downloading lots of porn or even worse, uploading lots of porn will.

Re: Routers?? I am screwed...
My former router is a D-Link DGL-4500, that particular router has very solid QoS (Quality of Service) and something they call "GameFuel." Basically it's exactly that: it prioritizes gaming ports and prevents anything else from flooding the connection, such as large file downloads or Torrents.
It's an expensive router normally, but if you're looking for exactly that, drop me a PM. I'm still selling mine as I've upgraded due to my own weird needs.

Re: Routers?? I am screwed...
I use the DGL-4500 (aka Gamer Lounge) from DLink... really, I'm not to impressed with it over the DGL-4300 (also aka Gamer Lounge). The only differences are a Gb WAN port and Wireless N. When I used TW and had a 10M pipe, my DGL-4300 ran PERFECTLY for YEARS and it probably still does if I reconnect it. I tried making it break (Streaming movies and doing major downloads on 3 different PCs and 1 wireless laptop) and I couldn't seem to make it even flinch. Granted, D/L rates would decrease slightly but nothing majorly noticeable.
Since I've moved I've been forced to use DSL and I switched up to the 4500 at the same time and I've since had all kinds of problems like if I am D/Ling from torrents anything else I try to do is futile but I'm not sure if it's the router or DSL. Basically, I've been to lazy to reconnect the 4300.

Re: Routers?? I am screwed...
I use the DGL-4300 and QoS is kick ass on it. You can also create entries for specific port calls or programs to allocate bandwidth too, to an extent. I can easily distribute the bandwidth between gaming and my TS server when needed, for example.
