works fine with mine, musta had it configured wrong or it did not properly detect hardware

Or Bunni. He fixed my linux problems back when i thought it was fun.
or on ubunto use the sudo command since ubuntu sets you up with the correct permissions your account.

    ex
    sudo apt-get install skype
    or w/e

    su

    if you really need it

btw, be sure to setup compiz... get the full blast of ubuntu!
I personally use fedora, I am not a fan of the Sudo command I like the power of Su conveniently in my hands.

    Definition:

    Su: Super User aka Root.

Geek to Layman: Super User is to linux as Administrator is to Windows, Root is the most powerful user who can do anything to your computer...with great power comes great responsibility.

    Definition:

Sudo: Ubuntu's way of not having a "root" user but allowing regular users monetary access to root's powers.

To new linux users, Ubuntu is a good starting place. Do not use Debian or Slacker. Stick with Ubuntu it is most familiar to not so comfortable Linux users testing the waters.

Also be very careful of what you do install, somethings may cause an error with other things. IE Compiz that Bunni suggested is a really FUN tool. It makes your desktop do all sorts of cool things. But some video drivers do not agree with Compiz (namely ATI) and can cause issues. NVidia is great though for their Linux support.

Well yeah if you have any questions do ask.

    Re: Ubuntu

I've used Ubuntu a few times on older machines to mess around with Linux. JBM is exactly right that it doesnt like ATI cards, I ended up ebaying an old nvidia card and it worked flawlessly. Evidently Ubuntu is based on the Isle of Mann since I ordered an OS CD and that is where it was shipped from. Only Linux program I know of that is offered by a box company (dell).

Took me forever to figure things out, but I think it was mostly because of my familiarity with windows being completely alien from Linux.

Exactly, it takes a bit of learning. Even I do not know many of the niche things Linux is capable of, I know it can but how I am not sure.

Dell offers Ubuntu because the company that makes Ubuntu offers decent support (for $$). But I think that it is great to have Dell offering it to users because that just gets more exposure to Linux. Linux already has the majority of Business class servers I think last I heard was 55-60% of them. Windows owns the PC market but is slowly getting some good competition from Apple (due to the IPod revival) and now Linux as well though Linux is much smaller share.

Sure it doesn't like them, but you can get it to work. I even got this dumb little X1400 laptop card to work and got compiz up and running. Don't let that discourage you from trying it.

Which.. in the end is actually bad for computer gaming if windows starts losing their big pie. Companies already have problems porting console games across different consoles. Having computer gaming be on OS's besides Windows would surely damper the whole of computer gaming. I don't see it happening anytime soon, but consoles are slowly creeping toward becoming 'gaming computers'.

I just found it easier to use nvidia with Ubuntu at least. After spending 5 hours trying to figure out how to get an old ATI card working it was either get a nvidia or reinstall windows 2000 on that old machine.

    Quitter :P

I spent a few days reading forums and stuff to get it to work. Which is pretty much what you have to do to get anything tricky to work in linux, i've found

yeah, this is the truth! takes time to figure it out since it isn't as well documented because there are so many flavors.

as for Gaming, well. PC games are already in trouble as it is. But I see many games on Mac that are on PCs; BF series. I think that if Linux became a more dominate form then games will go there too. Valve has been promising for YEARS that Linux support is coming.
