To new linux users, Ubuntu is a good starting place. Do not use Debian or Slacker. Stick with Ubuntu it is most familiar to not so comfortable Linux users testing the waters.
Also be very careful of what you do install, somethings may cause an error with other things. IE Compiz that Bunni suggested is a really FUN tool. It makes your desktop do all sorts of cool things. But some video drivers do not agree with Compiz (namely ATI) and can cause issues. NVidia is great though for their Linux support.
Well yeah if you have any questions do ask.

Re: Ubuntu
I've used Ubuntu a few times on older machines to mess around with Linux. JBM is exactly right that it doesnt like ATI cards, I ended up ebaying an old nvidia card and it worked flawlessly. Evidently Ubuntu is based on the Isle of Mann since I ordered an OS CD and that is where it was shipped from. Only Linux program I know of that is offered by a box company (dell).
Took me forever to figure things out, but I think it was mostly because of my familiarity with windows being completely alien from Linux.

Linux already has the majority of Business class servers I think last I heard was 55-60% of them. Windows owns the PC market but is slowly getting some good competition from Apple (due to the IPod revival) and now Linux as well though Linux is much smaller share.
