    memory help

    getting some more memory for my computer and would like some advice...

    So my computer can take DDR3 1066MHz SDRAM triple-channel support on six DIMMS

    I have 3 open slots and am looking at getting 4 gigs on 2 sticks or 6 gigs on 3 sticks. I have 3 open slots.

    So, I am looking at newegg to get memory and I got confused because I thought I had enough info but then I saw

    GeIL 6GB (3 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Triple Channel Kit Desktop Memory Model GV36GB1600C8TC - Retail

    I know I am PC3 but what is the 12800 number?

    If your motherboard is triple channel you really need to buy a 3 stick set.

    The 12800 is the memory speed, its actually the entire bit here: "DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800)".

    You need DDR3 1066 (PC3 8500) specifically. You could buy higher speed ram (as long as its the same DDR3 memory) and your motherboard would just underclock it. This doesnt hurt the ram or your PC and in some cases may save you some money.

    Like I said feel free to think about higher speed, like that geil set you posted as your motherboard will run it at whatever speed it can run it at and youll have some built in overclocking headroom if you choose to...
