    Home Network - Router to Router

    Hey guys, I could use a hand from you network-savvy people out there. Please, don't tell me to just get a cheap Hub. I know, it would make this whole process easy, but that is hardly the point now.

    So I have two routers. A WRT54G from Linksys and the D-Link DGL-4500. The D-Link is my primary router that I use as my gateway. It currently has it's DHCP enabled and is connected to this computer (which, obviously, has internet).

    My second router, the WRT54G, is in another room and connected with a straight through cable from LAN port to LAN port (the WRT54G comes with a standard automatic crossover detection tool supposedly, so they should work this way). This router is in "router" mode (as opposed to gateway) and has the DHCP server turned off. I also have set the ip address of this router to fall in line with the d-link's configuration - 192.168.0.xx

    I HAD internet at one point in time today through the WRT54G router as my solar panel's data updated TWICE, but I didn't realize it until it was too late. I can't seem to get it back...

    Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

    Since I forgot some of the info.

    Computer B is hooked up to the WRT54G router right now. From that computer I can access the setup tools for BOTH routers but I am still unable to ping google. Obviously the network is working and intact, but I just can't get internet through both routers.

    Well I am not entirely sure if I understand your setup but it seems like you basically want the second router to act as a switch. To do this simply plug both a LAN port from primary router and any devices you want online into the LAN ports on the second router (Leaving the WAN port empty). Make sure DHCP etc... is configured on the primary router only and you should be good to go. Also on the secondary router set the LAN IP to DHCP or a static address that is outside of the DHCP pool of the primary but still in the same subnet (if I read your comment right you already did this.)

    So you wiring would bet D-link(WAN port)->Cable/DSL etc.. D-link(LAN portA) -> Computer A.... D-LINK(LAN portB)->Linksys(LAN portA).....Linksys(LAN portB)-> Computer B

    If that is already your setup and it is not working you got me!

    That's already my setup. I'm going to try resetting the second router and go through the configuration again...

    It completely baffles me that I can configure Router A from Computer B (which is hooked up to Router B) and I can ping to Computer A but I still can not ping outside of the network.

    I think I may have it now. After resetting my router and setting it back up with the same settings as before, I now have internet on Laptop B. The only thing I did differently was that Router B was hooked into Router A as I was configuring it this time (before, I left them unconnected until they were fully configured).

    ...I don't get it.

    I'll bump the thread back up if I have problems again.

    Thanks though.

    I've done this kind of a configuration myself, and from what you posted it sounds like you're doing what you were supposed to be doing. My only guess as to why you couldn't access the internet was because the DNS service was still active on router B (so computer B would try to resolve google.com, and router B would fail at that since it gets first shot but it doesn't have its WLAN port connected). But that's a guess and may not have been it.

    But hey you at least got it working :9
