You know, I always thought that they used the whole thickness of the disk in the first place, not just the surface. You learn something new every day!

So what happens when you shut the power off? Does the holographic image go away like any other holographic image does... Hmmmmm

nope it seems to still be burned like a cd but maybe a few nanometers deeper each layer. reading each layer with a laser focused by an adjustable lense(focusing laser like focusing a camera blurrs fore & background with a clear middle ground) or to name it: Depth of Field http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Depth_of_field
