Would be pretty hard to show intent on infecting hospital computers though. Most lay people (average people) don't understand technology or how the internet and virii work..granted they're still probably scared to death of them by the media. It's hard to prove to joe blow the coder meant for hospital systems to be harmed.

A lot of hospitals are all on the same network...sometimes not even subnetted. They were originally designed that way and normally don't have the money, or desire to shut down parts of the network to transition to a more secure, balanced approach. What I mean is that the same network the MRI machines are on, is the same network the doctor's office computers, which have internet access are on.

It killed me hearing about how bad some hospitals are from my professors and even classmates who interned at hospital IT positions when I was in college. Our armed forces hospitals used to be pretty bad from a network security POV as well. I can't say much more about that though =p

The comments are interesting...someone made a good point...why are critical hospital machines hooked to the internet? The computer running the MRI machine does not need internet access does it?

i assume that critical hospital machines are hooked up to the intranet of the hospital so a person at the nurses station would get alerts on anything that could be wrong with a patient at a moments notice.

Then the computers at the nurses station are most likely connected to the internet for general doctor type use

Well yeah a LAN connection in the hospital i could understand, but as far as the actual internet.....eh. They should have a LAN going that is separate from a few computers that go straight into the internet. I know hospitals that have 3 or 4 LANS, one for wifi phones, 2 for hospital stuff, and 1 for public use. Only one for hospital and the public use are connected to the internet.

on the charges thing, could it be considered murder though since it is designed to infect computers thus the intention could be said to have infected the hospital computers?
