    Network Hardware problems

So, we had a lightening strike really close to our house which screwed up our internet and it also knocked AG's computer out for a bit. We eventually got his computer up and running and the internet people came out this morning and fixed the internet.

My internet is working, my dads is working, my moms is working, but AG's isn't.

When he plugs the ethernet cord in the back (you usually have an orange and green light) only the orange light comes on and it's not reading the internet/network.

You go into his network properties and it says he doesn't have a network adapter (which he does).

Can anybody shed some light on this?

I would just pop in his motherboard disc and re-install his network shit, but he doesn't have the disc here in Houston.

Ethernet controller or PCI Device even showing up in Device Manager under "Other Devices" ?

Occasionally you may also be able to see the adapter by going to View -> Show Hidden Devices.

If this adapter is on-board, you may even be able to check if it is disabled in the BIOS.

Based on the scenerio though his mobo/nic may have some damage from the strike

I went to show hidden devices and it isn't in there.

His LAN is a: Atheros L1E Gigabit LAN Controller featuring AI NET 2

When I go to Control Panel > Device Manager > Network Adapters, these show up:

    • RAS Async Adapter
    • Taredo Tunneling Psuedo-Interface
    • WAN Miniport (IP)
    • WAN Miniport (IPv6)
    • WAN Miniport (L2TP)
    • WAN Miniport (Network Monitor)
    • WAN Miniport (PPPOE)
    • WAN Miniport (PPTP)
    • WAN Miniport (SSTP)

    sigh...

I even found a setup for the Atheros L1E Gigabit LAN Controller and ran it... but still, nothing. After installing it and restarting, it still doesn't show up in the Device Manager... but when I go to the Add/Remove Programs, I can see the Atheros.

Let the computer try and find new devices. Should be a yellow question mark thing in the device manager. Usually there is a default set of drivers that work with most NIC cards. If its not showing up, it could be dead.

Power surges can fry NIC cards.

New card for $10 at BestBuy or Wally World should fix that for you.

Well I mean, it's built into the MB. It's not a separate controller.

sounds like the strike fried the on board network card. Get an external, they are cheap.
