I upgraded my video card finally and have my old 6600gt lying around and was wondering could I make this card my designated physics gpu?

Yes, you can run dissimilar GPU's for PhysX; but, only 8 series and higher can be used for PhysX. So the answer to your question about using the old 6600 is no.
