I own Creative products. I have had several Zen players: Zen Sleek, Zen Vision M, Zen Stone... all great products. I got a Zune, and it was too much of a pain in the ass for me... I returned it.

Re: Apple=Fail
Interesting timing that I read this post. On my home theatre system there is an iPod dock (It's a flip down deal in front, not a cable). Since I was doing house work I figured I would plug my iPhone in there since my iPod was at the office. The iPhone pops up with unsupported hardware... blah blah blah but it let me use it in "Airplane Mode", whatever the fuck that is. It still played but there was no usable display on the iPhone and nothing on my TV although I'm not using a HDMI out from the receiver. So I had no idea how to get to the song I wanted unless I just randomly flipped through music.

But that's Jobs protecting you from the evil third party hardware that wants to corrupt you. Just like Microsoft!
/sarcasm
Yeah, there was a time when I could use my iphone on linux, sync wirelessly, it was beautiful, but then Apple decided to really lockdown their itunes music database and broke the software solution that linux users were using. ITUNES ONLY! Fuck you Apple.

Option 2 sounded marginally better than option 1 (but it was CLOSE, and I mean very close). However, I am positive this has to do with the differences in digital processing quality between a pocket mp3 player and a $500 receiver. I still maintain my original position that an analog connection can carry high quality audio fine, but that fact doesn't really help your original problem.
