    Re: Recover lost data

There are various undelete programs out there. Basically when a file is tagged as deleted, it is not (normally) wiped away, it is just marked as OK to overwrite. If you use an undelete tool soon enough you can often find many of the deleted files. There is bigger hardware out there that can actually tell what the bits on your HD were at a point in the past (this is what law enforcement uses to find things that have been written over).

I do not even remember the name of the program I used for undeleting...but there are numerous varieties. Just google it and you will likely find a free utility to do it.

Do not discuss downloading of copyrighted software or other illegal activities in this context on TTP forums.

Or instead of illegally downloading software, use Google and find a free application. I suggest looking up "Undelete deleted files". I searched and found this program:

I never used it, so don't come yelling at me if it is a virus... I am just trying to help you, WITHOUT illegally downloading copyrighted material.

So what happens when you download said program and in the process it overwrites the information that you were looking for?

Yep, they do that too... everything you do on your computer is overwriting "deleted" data to some degree. Think all those temp files that various programs and the OS itself create. When I have undeleted stuff before some of it is beyond recovery (without the help of very specialized hardware).
