Unfortunately wireless is the only option for me, otherwise I would be having a cable run the length of my entire house on the outside of the wall and that looks ugly, not to mention a tripping hazard.

I understand that there is a certain level of bias when it comes to reviews, however the Linksy seems to have more positive reviews than the others. That concerns me.

So Cop, why do you hate linksys? Is it some kind of bias or did you have bad experiences with them? I am honestly curious and I am trying to get a feel for whats out there so that I can present a knowledgeable idea and solutions to my folks for possible purchase.

Four bad routers, 3 bad receivers, terrible tech support. I think that sums it up.

I have had the same linksys since mid 2004 and never had any issues. I bought the second one in late 06 also had no problems with it. I have a d-link that i pulled out of a internet jukebox and it works pretty well. Although the d-link seems to have a hard time when more than one device is using it. I will probably be swapping it out with my old linksys. I would bring my wireless n router to my house but my grandparents use it to get on. It was really good when I lived at home. Other people I know that have linksys dont have any trouble.

Were it me, I would go with wired. It beats wireless every time.
Ethernet works at up to 300 cable feet.
But, I used to be a professional wiring guy and tough runs are kind of fun to me.
But if you have to go wireless, I like D-Link myself.

I just wired my house. It's worth the work, you just have to learn how to do it. Once you do, it's no problem.

There enlies the problem, knowing how and actually doing it. unless one of you guys wants to fly up here, I am out of luck. Plus my folks would not be crazy about me wiring the house. wireless is a much easier sell : /

What's the speed of your internet connection and do you transfer large files between computers?

If your computer network port is 100MBit and your internet connection is only 10MBit then, assuming you are not transferring large files between computer, go with the G type. (cheaper)

I you are transferring large files between computers and you want the added range go with the N type. (more expensive)

There will be no transferring of files between the two computers. They may see each other on thwe network but thats it.

It will only be used for surfing and playing games and dling some songs. Sounds like N to me then right? or do the N and G have equivelnt transfer rates with each other?

N would be safe to last longer (technology wise), but if money is an issue then G will work fine for what you stated.

G = ~22 Mbit/s typical, max indoor range ~150 feet
N = 144 Mbit/s typical, max indoor range ~300 feet

and if range is not an issue... and you DEFINITELY won't be transferring files between machines... and your internet is less than 20-30 mbit... Just go G. Your bottleneck will be your internet speed.

When looking at the numbers they just seem too slow for thwe internet. I know for a fact we have cable. I believe its around 10 gigs a minute I want to say. Thanks for all the input people
