    Wireless desktop ideas

Oh great technical minds of TTP, I have come to pick your mind!

So I am in bit of a quandary right now. I am commuting to school this semester and such have my gaming rig at home, currently set up in my room. Unfortunately, the home computer, ~4 ish year old POS is the only one hooked up to the internet. There is no room in the computer area sadly to hook up my computer so what to do.

I figure the best plan is to set up a wireless network and have some kind of wireless card/USB hook up that goes into my computer up stairs. I cannot just have a regular router with additional Ethernet cords as I am in a raised ranch and my room is essentially on two floors up. In fact it would be faster if I could go through the ceiling of the room where the POS computer is and wind up in my room. It is really long though to track a cable. Well over 100 feet.

Would my idea work? Is is feasible? Is it practical? I have a router more or less lined up, but if you have a better one in mind please, be my guess.

As for what goes into the computer, I am at a loss as to what to do. Do I go PCI? Do I do something different? What is the best thing to do? I would like, if I can get essentially 3G speed. My internet is cable with 100Mbits/sec down.

How say ye oh great tech gurus?

Youre on the right track I would say. Your link is for a wireless hotspot for cell phones. Correct me if Im wrong, but 3G/4G is a measurement for cell phones, not computers. Stick with the Wireless Networking area of NewEgg.

Theres a combo special through Linksys right now for a wireless router and wireless card:

Youre looking at about $70 total (plus S & H). Ive been using Linksys for about 8 years now and its never steered me wrong for a simple plug and play solution to my internet for browsing, downloading media, and gaming.

enf pretty much said what I was gonna tell you. Used linksys for years and been happy. I have the wireless n router set up at my parents and it goes all the way over to my grandparents house 200+ feet through two brick houses. Same house the wireless g works great.

For the prices they have on them now, your getting a steal.

My mistake, I thought 3/4G was an indicator of overall speed of wireless data transfer. Can I get a bearing on what a (fast) speed is?
    Code:

Pote, if you want to use your full internet speed you want to go Wireless N. Wireless G transfers at max 54 Mb/s so you wouldn't get full use of your internet. Wireless N can transfer at 300 Mb/s a second so you can use the full speed of your net. Personally I hate linksys, I recommend....

I am a little concerned about the low customer satisfaction rating. It seems to have a high chance of failure. Why do you recommend them? Do you use it/them?

Wireless still seems hit or miss. I went with a D-Link because of the price a while back and had nothing but problems. Switched back to Linksys and they went away. If you look at the reviews you will see that Linksys has their share of problems also.

Are you sure you meant to say 100MBit?

Have had one for about a year now, as in all thing computers its 90% user error when it doesn't work. Mine works perfectly.

    Re: Wireless desktop ideas

100Mbps is the speed indicated on my network options.

Unfortunately wireless is the only option for me, otherwise I would be having a cable run the length of my entire house on the outside of the wall and that looks ugly, not to mention a tripping hazard.

I understand that there is a certain level of bias when it comes to reviews, however the Linksy seems to have more positive reviews than the others. That concerns me.

So Cop, why do you hate linksys? Is it some kind of bias or did you have bad experiences with them? I am honestly curious and I am trying to get a feel for whats out there so that I can present a knowledgeable idea and solutions to my folks for possible purchase.
