Just traditional sharing for me, not sure what the shortcoming of that is...
I haven't messed with it either but I'm assuming it is something like a domain where it trusts the computers in the group and can disable "guest" accounts where even if someone hacks into your network (For example via wireless), they still need a login.

HomeGroup is a simplified domain. No need for accounts... it's basically just a password to join the network. To share between computers previously you needed to allow anonymous sharing, which offers no security, or you needed to create an account on your machine that you authenticated with. It understands the W7 concepts of shared libraries and allows them to be shared amongst all the computers in the HomeGroup.

So, easy way to see it is some basic security for home networking without the hassle of creating accounts on all your computers.

One of my clan members says to always wait for windows to fix all the bugs before buying a new O.S, there's nothing wrong with buying vista ultimate.
