Best free amtivirus and spyware software?

Right now I'm using avast professional home edition and spybot, I'm hoping that's all I need to keep it safe. But if not, what some other free software you'd recommend to help scan for anything harmful to my computer?

I will try to find the article, but recently I read that Kaspersky was number one in Antivirus. I know Norton scored very low on the list. I personally use Avast because its free and I haven't had any trouble since switching over.

Avira and Avast battle back and forth on the free ones. I have used both and I guess they have worked ok. I haven't seen any viruses.

Avira has a daily pop-up that is really annoying. It can be disabled.

The avira popups were the reason I switched back to avg

The Avira pop-up is easy to disable. Just change the NTFS permissions to deny read/execute for all users. Poof. Problem gone.

Avira is usually up near the top of tests. for blocking it, you can also just run ZA and be even safer, and block the pop up

I'm giving Microsoft Security Essentials a try as far as anti-malware goes. Just installed it today on my main machine. I'll have to run it through the gambit of my test environment and see how it stands up.
