I have not owned a fancy phone yet, but if I were to get one it would have to support tethering out of the box. From what I've read, Verizon charge extra to use your phone for tethering, even when already paying for a data plan. Which is bullshit, but not surprising since in my experience Verizon loves to cripple hardware which you are paying for. They got sued (successfully) once years ago for making a user pay to enable bluetooth communication between his phone and computer for local only data transmission.

That's like selling someone a car and then making them pay to use the glovebox for storage. Fuck any company that operates like that.
I'm not 100% but I don't think any of the big 4 let you tether legally.

All the companies have us on lock down. I remember when they started letting you take your number with you. There was all the talk about competition and price drops. Nothing changed.

yup, I know for a fact that T-Mobile does. i do it with my Crackberry quite a bit. That's strange to hear your experience with T-Mobile stinks...but then again it's all relative to your area. I have had absolutely no problems with their service ranges, AT&T blows monkey balls, and Verizon is no much better.

    Here in ATL area it's

    1) T-mobile
    2) Verizon
    3) AT&T (although it's coming close to pulling second because of the iPhone)

problem is...T-Mobile doesn't get very cool phones...every now and then an exclusive comes out...but it'd be nice if Storm V2 was release on T-Mo also....of course you can always go unlocked as long as the phone has EDGE and UMA support.
