Our family isnt the richest, and neither are we, but the in-laws are still managing to somehow get us a laptop. Mainly for the wife so she can web browse and work on stuff for her job (while I game :9)

Her parents rock! They are paying $500 straight up at Best Buy today for it and it comes with a HP 2in1 printer/copier.

Finally, a laptop. Never had one.

    Re: XMAS Laptop!

Out of curiosity, what is the work she will be doing on the laptop?

If nothing is all that intensive, I would highly recommend looking at a netbook and using the leftover cash for a SSD. It'll save you a few dollars and will be much lighter and have a much longer battery life.

My buddy just got one of the cheapo best buy netbooks and tossed an 80gig SSD in it... He claims it has a 10+ hour battery life.

If it s a gift you will come off as an asshole if you ask for something else....thats a great laptop, so enjoy it. Of course, once you game on it...you will end up right back on your desktop bc its not even comparable. I have an alienware M17x and even with its power, its puny compared to my full tower beast.

Most netbooks have a 3-4 hour battery life. There are a few that have 7+. ASUS has a mid-range laptop that has 8 hours of battery life. Toshiba has a one for around $600 that offers 7 and 1/2 hours.

Make sure somebody keeps the receipt for that laptop. HPs have the highest warranty repair rate of any other manufacturer. Also, make sure you get rid of any software with HP on it (except for the quick launch buttons and the recovery media creation. MAKE THE RECOVERY DISCS). The updates from HP have frequently caused blue screens. We had about 50+ HPs come in the other month because of a special "windows HP update" that caused BSOD on bootup.

Not trying to say you are getting a piece of shit or anything. Any computer can last if kept in the right hands. The only reason I am typing all of this is so that you are prepared with the correct warranty information. The last thing you want is to have no record of the purchase date which could hinder a warranty repair.
