Here's a couple of tweaks I found to fix a few things I found REALLY annoying about Windows 7. First, disable indexing. (Google how to, I don't recall at the moment.) Windows 7 really picks the MOST inopportune times (like when gaming) to index.
Second, Go into your power management control panel and make sure it doesn't turn off your hard drives (or any other peripheral you don't want). I was having problems where it was turning my HDs off every 10 minutes so accessing data would take a bit of time for the drives to spin up. My HD makes a single click every time it spins up (has since day 1) and I was hearing it click so often (because it was being put to sleep by the OS) that I thought the drive was going bad.
Third, consider setting a static page file. This is more of a Windows in general tip. I really hate how Windows manages the page file size, It causes the page file to get fragmented, which degrades performance. I always set it to a static file 1.5 - 2 times the size of my physical RAM. With 2 gigs, I set it to 4 gigs. With 4 gigs, I set it to 6. It's under 'Advanced System Settings' under Performance. (Right click My Computer and go to properties to find Advanced System Settings).
Outside of those, and the issue of W7 64-bit taking more RAM for some things than Vista 32-bit did, I've been quite pleased. I fixed that problem by doubling my RAM to 4 gigs.
