best ripping program I've ever used was dvdshrink. It lets you not only rip the movie, but selectively rip the dvd. IE: You can rip the movie only and skip the extras. Been a while since I used it but I think it also (hence the name) re-encodes the movie and shrinks it.

I have found (DISCLAIMER: for my DVD's to be used as backup) that DVD shrink and DVD dycrypter are starting to get outdated. Both worked great in the past, but since neither has been updated in years they are able to rip less and less of newer movies that I have bought.
This best solution that works for me currently.
ImgBurn (by the maker of DVD decrypter): http://www.imgburn.com/ + DVD43 (removed link so that it doesn't show up in searches)
Let me know if the second program should not be listed. I don't want people using this the wrong way.
