    DVD Ripping

    Guys,

I have been looking for a way to rip my DVD collecton to MP4. I have tried Handbrake to no avail because I always get the "Copywright protected" error messages. I have the trial version of Cucusoft and it seems to work but I would rather not pay $30 and give them my credit card info.

Is there a free program that does everything? IE overrides protection and also rips. I know there are different programs where you can burn the DVD to your harddrive without the protection and then RIP into Handbrake but I don't want to take the time every time to do that.

    All help is appreciated.

    Will

club.cdfreaks.com... forums for this kind of stuff with tons of software listed I'm sure. Though Kanati's choice is the most popular, even as old as it is.

If it's not broke, don't fix it.

wow, TTP is allowing posts on telling people how to bypass copyright protection? We all know the stuff exists but we really shouldn't be posting ways around it on the forums.

You are allowed to make an archival copy of any dvd you own. Kinda. It's one of those grey areas.

Frankly... If I own it... I'll do anything I want with it as long as it, or it's copies do not leave my possession.

BUT... I will bring it up for debate in the business forums.

It is 100% legal to bypass for personal use. Same way it is legal to rip a store bought CD into iTunes or into a MP3.

    Thanks,

    No it isn't.

DVDs are protected by CSS (or sometimes by another encryption sceme), and circumventing them (using a brute force attack or decryption using a key) is illegal under US law as "Circumvention of copyright protection systems".

It that stupid and illogical? Hell yeah, but it is the law.

Ripping an unprotected CD or DVD for personal backup is legal. But if it has any form of protection on it then breaking that is illegal.
