It's not counterfeiting per se, but they take lower-end processors and re-mark/stamp them with markings of faster processors. Or, they take processors that failed testing and sell them anyways.

One of the videos said it was just an aluminum stock sheet with a fake fan.

That puts an end to that:

    Hi Kyle,

Following is Newegg.com's official statement reguarding the Intel shipping story:

"Newegg is currently conducting a thorough investigation surrounding recent shipments of questionable Intel Core i7-920 CPUs purchased from Newegg.com.

Initial information we received from our supplier, IPEX, stated that they had mistakenly shipped us "demo units." We have since come to discover the CPUs were counterfeit and are terminating our relationship with this supplier. Contrary to any speculation, D&H Distributing is not the vendor that supplied us with the Intel Core i7-920 CPUs in question.

Newegg’s top priority is to proactively reach out to all customers who may have been affected to ensure their absolute satisfaction. We have already sent out a number of replacement units and are doing everything in our power to resolve the matter promptly and with the least amount of inconvenience to our customers.

We have always taken pride in providing an exceptional experience for each customer, and we apologize for any inconvenience to our valued customers. We take matters like this extremely seriously, and are working in close cooperation with Intel and the appropriate law enforcement authorities to thoroughly investigate this incident."

    Thanks,

    Scott Meaney

This should have been done right away instead of the initial cover-up. They were clearly counterfeit, and they let these complaints, pictures, and videos go on for days. I agree, I have had 10 years of great service from Newegg, but this was just shady and tarnished them a bit.

Re: Counterfeit i7 CPUs Sold on Newegg

As BD said, In China everything gets knocked off.

A supplier of mine decided to have "certain" product manufactured in China. I jokingly asked "How long will it take before they find it being sold as a knock off somewhere?"

Their answer was "We have very strong legal protection in China, so that won't happen"

Six months later, it was discovered that employees who worked in the manufacturing facility during the day, were going home and building exact copies of the same product, using stolen blueprints, and the skills taught to them by the American trainers, and competing for the same business with their "Cheaper" brand.

In China... everything is knocked off.

I wonder about the piece of equipment we sold and was shipped to china... My boss figures they have already tore it apart and built more.

Yeh, I would even hesitate to use the word counterfeit. They weren't even processors. They were dummies. Fakes. Models. Holograms, practically. A counterfeit can at least still fulfill a function, ostensibly.
