Assuming this is the right processor, you can support 64 bit, you just need the operating system.

The bios detecting "just over 3" might mean you'll need to flash your bios as well. (3072 == 3 gig btw... what's "just over" mean?)

Krakkens and shit. stop tempting them.

roger dodger. I would. You can get an upgrade version pretty cheap. You a student by chance? I just got a student version of windows 7 professional 64 bit oem for $38 with tax and that included the media.

Good call, up to date bios is always a good idea prior to windows 7 installation.

I thought that i saw 3.1 gigs, but i may be wrong, i will check again. I have never flashed a bios, and honestly the process, from what i read makes me a bit nervous.

As i see my options, one last question. Is there any harm in leaving the 4th gig installed, or would it be better to wait until i install Windows 7?

    No harm at all.

XP will still have the use of the extra 1gb, and with today's software, that could be a big help.

Remember, the more physical RAM you have, the less virtual (and much slower) RAM is required.
