Re: New Build Problems
Student Offer?
Cause I had a problem with mine as well (or activating it), I just had to call up Microsoft's Support department and they added my Product Key into the activation server file. Then it activated like a charm.
I actually had to do it again just the other day once I got all my shit installed and reinstalled Win 7.

I like G.Skill first glance makes it look like super cheap Chinese or Japanese POS but it's really high quality RAM. I've run off it since August 2007.
DOA RAM is just something that happens, brands won't change that unless they purposefully use bad quality materials or bad manufacturing quality.

Re: New Build Problems
RAM is one of the most important components in your build. Sometimes you order and can DOA. Just happens. Especially when you buy cheap. Doesnt matter who you order from.
Personally I do not mind spending the money on RAM. OCZ is in the market for enthusiast RAM, only because of specification. It is a hit or miss with that brand, seen it too many times with friends.. but at least newegg is easy on RAM exchanges. Remember If your RAM goes bad it can lead to a whole confusing mess of issues. Corsair makes enthusiast product lines, expensive but solid.
Vendor rant.
I prefer to spend money for QC with their product. Same reason I buy nVidia/Intel/Asus/Sennheiser/Panasonic/Logitech/Peavey/DeLL.
These product vendors can be expensive for a reason. Doesn't make 'em perfect -- but generally the best.
The only hardware vendor I have ever known to consistantly balance price, reliability, and quality -- all in one package is Sony.
Shame they do not spread themselves further in the realms of hardware anymore. They found their niche 4 times over since the early 1980s.. and it aint hardware anymore.

I have 12 gigs of OCZ Reaper and knock on wood, haven't had a problem yet.
