Certain lines of Antec power supplies have a higher failure rate. I had one go bad on me as well, but it was one I bought at Fry's.

Got this yesterday and installed it last night. It's super quiet! The grinding and electrical static noise is now gone. It was my old PSU that was making the grinding noise, which makes me wonder, because it was an Antec 500W gaming PSU.
I had issues with an Antec 500w PSU in my HTPC. It died after about 6 months of use and was making a terrible noise. I switched over to an Antec Earthwatts 430w PSU and haven't had any problems since. I guess we just had a couple bad apples.
Well, to be fair, I did have that Antec for about 5 years now. I got it back in 2005, so it's about average for the lifespan of a PSU. Of all the PC's I've built, I've never really had a PSU that lasted me longer than 5 years, regardless of the brand. I've used Antec, some no-namers, Thermaltake and they all only seem to last 5 years, this ofcourse is without trying the really expensive high-end gaming PSU's. I've heard good things about Corsair though, so maybe my next build will have to be Corsair.

Like I just posted, I did have this Antec for about 5 years. Is that standard for a PSU? I mean, the PSU still works and powered my PC after the rebuild for about a week, it's just that the electrical chirping was just getting unnerving as I was afraid it was gonna go BOOM!

I've had power supplies last that long... not necessarily in gaming rigs, but it's certainly not unheard of. Antec is generally pretty good, but some of their mass-produced for retail lines are a bit spotty at best for quality.
