    We first laid eyes on Western Digital&#39;s Raptor line of 10K RPM desktop hard drives in 2003. &nbsp;The drives were only 36GB in size, but man were they fast. &nbsp;Since then Western Digital has increased capacity, decreased physical platter size (3.5&quot; to 2.5&quot and overall driven performance up. &nbsp;With the last VelociRaptor dating back to 2008, the line was overdue for an update.</p>

    Meet the new VelociRaptor:</p>

    I had a raptor die after about three years in my RAID. Reformatted the other one and it is still going strong. The other one is definitely dead however

    I've had my V-Raptor running hard for two years,now, without a hiccup. Flawless.

    I'm wondering what these new ones are gonna go for? I don't think I would pay more than $300 for a HDD.....these days,that is getting into decent SSD $. When the V-Raptor came out,it was easier to get the big-bucks for a high-performance HDD,but those days are over.

    Even the newer budget SSDs offer 2-10x the performance of the VelociRaptors. If you're going to spend the $$$ go SSD. Don't waste your money on old technology.

    If you have Windows 7 and go SSD don't forget to set the TRIM. You can google Windows 7 TRIM and it should help you out.

    On a semi-related note,I got a little inside info from a friend the other day....he works for Seagate.

    They will be releasing (later this year) a hybrid drive that is supposed to beat the Raptors. It will be a standard HDD,but it also has a flash drive integrated. It will use both the platters and the flash to make an extremely fast HDD. It sounds like a pretty good idea to help bridge the gap until SSDs come down to the real World in terms of pricing. Faster than a standard HDD,but cheaper than a quality SSD.

    Seagate and others have been talking about those hybrid drives for a long time. They were announced several years ago and nothing has come to light.
