Intel discontinuing the i7 920

I believe the highest a silicon processor has gone is around 40 GHz, but the heat generated (combined with the fact it would probably be one time usage) is too much too deal with in the consumer market. Paralell computing will go core crazy until the amount that will fit on the chip is reached along with heat production, and then.... then there will be some issues. That is, if we stick to silicon. I think there is a graphite chip that went 100 GHz.....

I think the Core i5 750 is actually the better buy right now anyways. I was waiting for the 920 to become more affordable... it just didn't happen.

isn't the i7 930 pretty much the same chip but clocked higher?

That remains to be seen. The 920 was big with the overclockers because it would overclock well. It's not major news, but for enthusiasts I figured they'd want an opportunity to stock up. Microcenter still had the processors for $199 last I checked. Of course now I can't get their processors to come up on the website.

I know Veovis has his 920 o'clocked but he got the D0. I have mine to speed step up to 3.4/3.5 GHz when its needed and mine is a C0. At idle or low usage that sucker runs at 1.5 GHz. I have manually o'clocked it to 4.0 GHz but it wasn't needed, the damn thing is fast enough with 4 cores and 8 threads. I think they o'clock fine. Depends on the board you have and your PSU.

Sucks they are discontinuing but im also inclined to take better care of the 920 I do have now. It was a great step into CPU's with intel.

Mine wont overclock at the moment. I think it has to do with my memory. I kept the cpu constant and o/ced the memory just to check and the system wouldn't post. This is after 10 failed mild overclocks to my C0.

Anyways, it still performs like a dream at stock
