    Powerline Networking

    OK,

I am needing to increase the bandwidth of my computer upstairs adn am looking into Powerline Networking. My wireless signal sucks because I am running it through about 3 walls, a ceiling, and a fireplace to all block the signal. Anyone have any suggestions or have used these? I also thought about addint a wireless port upstairs but for the money I only have 1 computer up there and want it wired.

My biggest question is if I buy to go for the 85 MBS or the 200 MBS systems? I have a 25/15 pipe at home but will the 200 work faster or is it a waste of an extra $50 since I don't have that speed?

I am looking at the Belkin 4073 or 4075 systems.

    Any help will be appreciated.

Neither solution will ever fully be saturated by your internet as it is now.

Yeah, unless you are doing big LAN transfers with Gigabit ethernet the 85MB solution is fine. Keep in mind that Powerline adapters can be just as terrible as wireless depending on the signal noise of the environment. Electicians don't install the circuits, conduits, terminals, switches, and wiring with signal ingress in mind. So you may or may not get unexpected results from this.

i tried two different Power to plug systems and both had to be reset all the time due to power line noise in the house. I ended up running cat5e cabling and I have been much happier since.

I have the 85mbit belkin... I get about 20mbit throughput. I was actually surprised to get what I got though since the wiring in my house is HORRIBLE. No grounding wire.... copper so old it will literally fall apart if you try to bend it... So basically if you have good wiring in the house you should be ok with 85. If you want to stream movies or anything I'd go with 200. And cross your fingers in any case.

Krakkens and shit. stop tempting them.

yea, the speed they put on those is best case theoretical. Go for the highest throughput you can afford and cross your fingers. It works for some people just fine. I have a newer house (less than 10 years old) and if there is enough going on in the house (vacuuming, microwave etc) it causes line noise if they are plugged into the same circuit.

I have CAT5 running through every outlet so I think that I will just patch the 2 together in the patchbox and see if that works. Then I can have a dedicated CAT5 line form the router to the upstairs. If I can't get that to work I will try the powerline solution.

    Thanks for the input,

yea I tried the gigabit and it's theoretic output not real life. Distance and line noise and quality of wiring in the house cuts it in half if not more. Have to read the fine print on the box and check real life reviews of the products.

    Re: Powerline Networking

I saw some reviews of the gigabit powerline networking and there were results of 120-200mbps, which is much better than anything else I have seen. Sure, CAT5 is the way to go, but some homes just can't do it... like my home. The stupid cathedral ceilings and ridiculous wall placement won't allow me to run CAT5 through the house. I researched the powerline networking a few months ago, and I will be going this route eventually as Wireless N is still garbage when trying to stream HD video across the house.

    Hopefully powerline will fix this.
