WEP can be broken in 5 minutes using a Linux Live Distro CD. WPA at a minimum (and it can be cracked too) but WPA2 if the router supports it is what I recommend.

Not trying to hijack the thread, but what bugs? I've been using WPA2 on my home network for nearly 3 years with no issues.
A lot of the network cards have issues running wpa2/AES with ipv6.

I had the same problem on the network here WPA2/AES (not mixed mode) will drop the encryption key upon renewal when using ipv6. Ill dig around and see if i can find the research done on this

99% of home users will be using ipv4, so it really doesn't matter...

If you're direct to modem, BE SURE you have some type of software firewall enabled.

Could be several things. Fucked up WAN port on router, cabling, hardware fail, mal-configured or corrupt firmware. Even the IP address associated to your routers WAN MAC on the ISP end could cause the problem if theres some funky routing issue with the scope. Since we have established it's password protected, than not likely broken into. Even if it was, immediately after a router reboot speeds should be fine and steadily decline as the offending internet stealer's torrent restablishes connection to peers and starts wheezing off your upload cap (common cause to super sluggish speeds).

Hard to say a cause without troubleshooting and isolation -- but most common is router going kaput.

Hve you tried a different ethernet cable from modem to router, or in the least swapping the ends?
