Wi-fi owner fined for lax security in Germany

German citizens are responsible for the security of their own private wireless connections, a court has ruled.

That is pretty funny considering how many people buy a router and plug it in and leave everything default. They then are confused why they see (and this is how they pronounce it) lins-keys everywhere.

Cisco/Linksys have come up with a rather unique solution to this issue. They have a router now that comes pre-configured with security on. They include a USB drive that has software that will auto-configure any wireless client on Windows & MacOS. The real bonus is the router has a "guest" network with a password that can be given out to guests, so that you don't have to compromise the security of your own network to allow visitors on your network.

Nice to see that they've offered that for people not comfortable setting it up themselves. Now if only Nintendo would improve the security offering on the DSi (niece just got one). It only works on WEP (or no security). And I am not going to downgrade the sec on my networks to WEP. Ever.

I am pretty sure the DSi could do WPA, but the original DS and DS Lite only did WEP.
