I've decided to go with the 480. This will be a fun first PC.

Not sure if your going to use the PC for just gaming, but in "general" Nvidia have less CG software compatibility issues.

I too went with the 480.

I may dabble in some computational physics, but that probably won't happen much.

Unbelieveably powerful. Gets warm, but if you turn the fan up ( and optimize your case airflow) to 60, 70, you shouldn't have to worry unless you're playing Crisis.
2142 won't let me run the card as high as it goes, because it doesn't see it. Fail.
TF2 will get 150-200 fps on full settings, full q16xc MSAA and 16xAA (I might have the pre- and suffixes mixed up)

    Re: Nvidia vs. ATI

ATI hasn't wowed me since the 8800GT. Everything else has been... meh. ATI keeps throwing out great stuff while nVidia has been lagging behind until late. Tough choice. I typically would NEVER buy the top of the line model of either brand and instead I get the card right before the big price jump. Hell, go for two if it is in your budget.

For computational physics OpenCL is the way to go since it can be used on both ATI and NVIDIA card as well as x86 cpus. CUDA is nice but its proprietary.

Standard Disclaimer: 150% of what I say is bullshit.
