Sugon, an OEM of servers and workstations in China, has started selling of machines equipped with the Hugon Dhyana processors. These are processors based on AMD’s 1^st Generation Zen microarchitecture. The CPUs feature up to eight cores and are compatible with the x86 instruction set architecture, thus can run all popular applications available today. The workstations can be equipped with the latest Quadro RTX or Quadro GV100 graphics cards from NVIDIA.

This week, Microsoft officially rolled out the Windows 10 May 2019 Update to the world. However, due to some recurring issues over the last couple of updates, the company is thankfully taking a very measured approach this time. An approach which will hopefully mitigate some of the update issues that always seem to arise when a major system update comes to software that runs under an almost infinite number of configurations.

A press release sent out by GIGABYTE on Friday said that the company would demonstrate one of the industry’s first SSDs featuring a PCIe 4.0 interface at Computex next week. The company says that its drive will offer maximum sequential read/write speeds of up to 5 GB/s. when used with AMD’s upcoming Ryzen 3000-series platform supporting PCIe 4.0.

Another snippet of information from Intel today relates to the company’s future mobile platform CPU. We know it’s called Ice Lake-U, that it is built on Intel’s 10nm process, that it has Sunny Cove cores, and has beefy Gen11 integrated graphics. We’re still waiting on finer details about where it’s going to be headed, but today Intel is unloading some of its integrated graphics performance data for Ice Lake-U.

Last year, Intel showcased a CPU during its keynote a processor with all of its cores at 5 GHz. Today, that becomes a reality – Intel is set to launch a processor that promises that frequency in any scenario. The new Core i9-9900KS is an 8-core processor that will run at 5.0 GHz during single core workloads and multi-core workloads.

One of the first things we've seen this week at Computex is the new MSI P100 Creator system. I've always been a big fan of good design ID, and in the past we've seen companies attempt to market gaming oriented designs into the professional designer market. This time around however, MSI has hit the nail on the head. Here's a design that looks elegant in any situation, but still packs a punch in pure power.

The design ID for the P100 system looks great. The chassis is only 10 litres but uses a compartmentalized design that separates out the CPU, GPU, and PSU into its own areas to aid for airflow, and in most cases the air comes in at the bottom and exhausts out of the top half of the design or through the vents at the top. The power supply is an off-the-shelf SFX unit that's 80PLUS Gold certified, and is good for 650W.

In its top configuration, MSI said that this unit will run a full Core i9-9900K, using an off-the-shelf motherboard. We asked about power consumption, and they said this unit is designed to take the CPU up to 120W. In order to make the best of those 120 Watts, MSI includes its Creator software which allows users to select which applications are running, and the system will adjust the CPU frequency for single core/multi-core as well as fan speeds and such accordingly.

The system can also support a high end NVIDIA RTX graphics card, and offers USB and Type-C on the front panel.
It's an elegant design and I was taken aback when I first saw it, as it hits the nail on the head for the market it intends to go for. Kudos to MSI.

Modern enthusiasts often want one of two things from their monitor: high frame rates, or great color reproduction. MSI is certainly going for the latter in its new 5Kx2K display, the PS341WU. This is a 5120x2160 21:9 monitor that offers 98% coverage of the DCI-P3 color gamut with a DeltaE of under 3, and comes with HDR600 certification. The display also has an AdobeRGB mode (92-93%), and an sRGB mode. The unit has a nanoIPS display, supporting 4-way picture-by-picture.

The look of this monitor is great. I had some time for hands on, and the fact that it is like a standard 4K monitor but with 33% extra room on the side really gels well with what would be my normal workflow. MSI said that it hits the HDR600 specification by being 600 nits peak, 500 nits typical.

The monitor can switch between color modes using the OSD, a macro button on the rear, or through software installed on the system. The design goes great with the new P100 system. MSI states that they expect the monitor to be available in Q3, at a cost of $1299, which is $200 cheaper than equivalent competition. Perhaps I should start reviewing monitors(!).

Along today’s announcement of the new Cortex-A77 CPU microarchitecture, the arguably bigger announcement is Arm’s unveiling of the new Valhall GPU architecture and the new Mali-G77 GPU. It’s been three years since the unveiling of the Bifrost architecture, and as the industry and workloads continue to evolve, so must the company’s GPUs.
Valhall and the new Mali-G77 follow up on the last three generation of Mali GPUs with some significant improvements in performance, density and efficiency. While last year’s G76 introduced some large changes to the compute architecture of the execution engines, the G77 goes a lot further and departs from Arm’s relatively unusual compute core design.
