Dual Gigabit lan

Allright I know nothing about this, however a core I7 mobo I got a deal on has it and I wonder do I need to connect two different cables from the router to the sockets on the motherboard? What good does it do?

It does not do anything, unless you bridge the connections, using your OS. It is nice if you want to use your PC as a router, or use it as a network server for the purpose of creating a a mesh network, or a Beowulf cluster but 99.9% of people do not need it. you probably do not want to bridge your connections since it will not give you any better speed.

typically the dual cards are used to have access to two different networks. You could set one Ethernet connection to only work with gaming ports and connect that to your high speed gaming router. Connect the other to a home network.

The simple answer. If you have a router you don't need it unless you have two specific networks you want to work on simultaneously. To get anything out of it for gaming you would have to have 2 internet providers (cable, fios, DSL, etc) and you connect one to each and set your system to use one and your gaming to use the other.

connecting 2 to the same router will do you no good since it can't transmit to both ports simultaneously.
