    fender,

Is your motherboard dual channel or tri channel DDR3? If it's dual channel you'd want to go with multiples of 2. 6GB kits are intended for tri-channel DDR. You said 'quad core' but what specific CPU? Intel? AMD? Phenom/i7/i5.

The 790FX and 890FXA chipsets are rated at DDR3 1600 unless you overclock.

Get 2x2G dual channel kits from a reputable brand like G.Skill. Don't worry about uber fast timing. Get DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) rated RAM. $85-100 per set.

    Newegg.com - Computer Hardware,Memory,Desktop Memory,G.SKILL,DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800),4GB (2 x 2GB)

Shouldn't need more than that unless you plan on overclocking.
