if you notice at the bottom right corner - there is a sign in button. You hit that and are prompted to sign in to your google account....are they "secretly" going after photobucket/imageshack/et al.?

lol, I was just about to say that this sounds suspiciously like something Google already does. For example, dragging and dropping attachments into your gmail. I didn't think uploading pics the same way would be all that hard for them.
