Invest in some high quality tamper-proof Torx screwdrivers.

    Remove HDD cover.

Remove HDD platters. Use prybar if necessary.

Place platters on smooth, flat surface. Grip is important.

Use orbital sander with 36-grit sandpaper on platters for about 1 minute in pattern of your choosing. Flip, repeat.

Nothing beats data destruction like physical destruction.

Simply put is that the magnetic medium on the disk platter can 'remember' what it was.

All a hard drive is is a bunch of 1s or 0s which get stored on the magnetic medium as either a positive or neutral charge. So lets say that you have the letter A, or 01000001. That is stored and read by the hard drive as =+=====+. Now, lets say you write them all to 0 or neutral. You would end up with a disk that to most programs would read ========. But the difference is, when you write from 1 to 0 you don't end up dissipating all of the charge, and there is still enough to be read by a hard drive if you tell it to with a recovery software (imagine it like ========)

Now, realistically? No one is likely to ever bother to try and read your personal hard drives that you've formatted. As Heavy said, the profit just isn't in it for them.

But you go buy a used server from a business and they haven't erased their customer data well enough? Blam, you have a couple thousand names and CC numbers. It's happened before and I'm sure it will happen again...

Also, the larger the capacity of the drive the smaller each + or = charge is and the harder it is to recover the charge. It has been hypothesized that most modern disks over 15GB would be hard to recover without specialized tools (serious computer forensics setups) due to the tiny nature of each charge

Also what i recommend in my professional opinion.

Much more effective then destroying the disks physically too.

Use the +35 write algo. Not recovering anything from that.
